Dr. John Hurlbert is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Clinical Neurosciences and Surgery, University of Calgary.

Dr. Hurlbert obtained his medical degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1985.  He then moved on to complete his PhD in 1993, with a focus in spinal cord injury, from the University of Toronto. Before coming to Calgary, Dr. Hurlbert completed two fellowships, one from the University of Toronto in 1994, followed by the other in 1995 from the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona.

Dr. Hurlbert’s research interests lie in translational spinal cord injury research, clinical trials, and complex cranio-cervical reconstruction. 

Clinically, Dr. Hurlbert is the founding President of the Canadian Spine Society, Co-founder and past chair of the Calgary Spine Program  (nine spine surgeons, trains four national and international clinical spine fellows each year), and Director of the Neurosurgical Residency Program.
