Dr. Philip Barber is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences and a Staff Neurologist at the Foothills Medical Centre. Dr. Barber obtained his Undergraduate Medical Degree from the Sheffield University Medical School in 1991 and undertook general medical training prior to specializing in neurology at the Manchester Royal Infirmary and Hope Hospital in Manchester, UK. He completed fellowship training in clinical and experimental stroke research under the mentorship of Dr. Alastair Buchan, and his Doctorate of Medicine Degree from the University of Sheffield, UK in 2005. Dr. Barber is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada and of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. Dr. Barber’s early research interests relate to the understanding of the individual patient response during acute stroke following the administration of tissue plasminogen activator and identifying clinical predictors of neuroimaging surrogates of functional outcome. Currently, Dr. Barber is focusing on experimental stroke and the imaging of neuro-inflammation, blood brain barrier breakdown during early ischemia and the neuroprotective properties of resveratrol. His research accomplishments have been recognized by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada with the Henry Barnett Scholarship in 2005 and the University of Calgary Innovator Award. He is funded by the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research, The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
